Embracing the Change with Generation Y
For the first time in history we have four generations working together and at the helm of the activity we have Generation Y, the newest entrant, after the Generation X. It is now inevitable that a downturn will occur in productivity, if the four generations do not acclimatize and work together. Each generation has certain expectations in return for a unique skill set that they bring to the table.
Competitive advantage today requires organizations to have employees that own their work and are accountable. Today, we need a workforce that is proactive, independent, sensitive to the ambiguities of the environment and willing to accept changes as quickly as the Indian market today accepts different clothes brands. We want employees that work with minimal supervision but do our systems advocate this change?
While most organizations are excited to have accountability in their list of competencies, very fewmake changes that would drive ownership by creating an entrepreneurial work culture.
Generation Y, requires transparent line of sight and visibility. This social media savvy group wants to work with leadership that is inspirational, approachable and connected. They want to feel like entrepreneurs, of, by and for their organization. They want to feel connected and contribute creatively to different areas of the organization.
In return, they are willing to take on challenging work, ambiguity and change and provide results that contribute to the larger vision of the organization.
Today organizations that recognize the need to leverage on this diversity and build a culture that allows for old school leadership and new age entrepreneurial systems are introducing systems that help unite different working styles. Some of the practices are Reverse Mentoring, Flexible KPIs, Leveraging Social Media, and Communication through One to Ones and Cross generation Transversal Working groups.
